The Dream Inn has been a Santa Cruz landmark since the 1960s, and its makeover leaned into that era rather than erasing it. Its location is unmatched in town: on the sand, between the wharf and the start of West Cliff Drive, with the Boardwalk on one side and the cliffs and surf breaks on the other.
Room craft: book a beach room for a balcony over the sand, or a higher cloud-level room for the widest bay views. Ocean-facing rooms are worth the upgrade. If you visit between early November and mid-January, note the pool and hot tub closure for refurbishment.
Practicals: 175 West Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz, about an hour north of Monterey. Parking fee applies. Fit: families, couples, surfers and Boardwalk-bound travelers.
