String the peninsula's gilded quarter into one day and sequence does all the work: shoreline first, Drive midday, village afternoon, beach sunset. Here's the day locals design for visiting parents.
Morning — Pacific Grove's edge (9:00). Start on Ocean View Boulevard where the Coastal Trail ends: Lovers Point's coves, the tidepool shoreline toward Point Pinos (respect the pools; take only photos), Victorians behind. October-February, detour ten minutes to the Monarch Grove Sanctuary — the butterfly clusters are a morning phenomenon, and the docents' scopes convert skeptics. Coffee in PG's sweetly unhip downtown before the gate.
Midday — the 17-Mile Drive (10:30). Enter at the Pacific Grove gate (ocean on the right the whole way) and run the marked stops: Spanish Bay's boardwalk, Point Joe, Bird Rock's barking census, Cypress Point Lookout, the Lone Cypress (photo), the ghost trees at Pescadero Point (better photo). Then the gate-fee alchemy: lunch at the Lodge — terrace over the 18th green, chowder or the Tap Room burger — and the receipt refunds the toll. Walk to the 18th's seawall after; watching golfers finish the most famous hole in the sport costs nothing further.
Afternoon — Carmel's square mile (1:30). Exit the Drive's Carmel gate straight into the village. Park once near Sunset Center and go on foot: Ocean Avenue's slope, then immediately off it — the courtyards and passages hide the best galleries and tasting rooms (a Monterey County flight in a garden courtyard is the correct 3pm). Hunt the Comstock cottages (Tuck Box on Dolores, Hansel and Gretel on Torres), collect the no-addresses lore, and let the dog census entertain. Allow two unhurried hours; buy nothing heavy — the walk continues.
Golden hour — Mission, then sand (4:30). Five minutes south, Carmel Mission catches late sun on its sandstone like it was designed for it (it was): the basilica, Serra's tomb, and the bougainvillea courtyards want 45 quiet minutes. Then back to Ocean Avenue's foot for the finale — Carmel Beach as the sun drops: white sand, cypress silhouettes, off-leash joy in all directions, bonfires in season down the southern stretch. Scenic Road's bluff walk south to the Wright house extends it for the unhurried.
Evening options. Dinner in the village (reserve the good rooms by Thursday for weekends — Carmel eats early and books solid), or the romance upgrade: drinks back at the Lodge's terrace, or La Playa's gardens if the day ends in an inn. Point Lobos, five minutes south, is tomorrow's opening act if the legs vote yes.
The fine print. Weekdays transform everything — the Drive's pullouts, village parking, dinner tables. Fog mornings don't cancel the plan; they reorder it (village and Mission first, Drive after the burn-off). And the day runs car-light but not car-free: twenty total driving minutes connect its five chapters, which is the peninsula's whole luxury.
